Petr Klima of Czechoslovakia defected to the Detroit Red Wings in 1985 after the Red Wings had drafted him 86th overall in 1983. He was the first Czech born player to go directly to an American based team and the first Czech player after the Stastny brothers to defect to the NHL. Klima spent 4 ½ seasons in Detroit before being traded to Edmonton. With the Oilers, Klima won a Stanley Cup in ‘89/’90. He spent 13 years in the NHL, playing 786 games and amassing 573 points. Petr also played in Tampa, LA and Pittsburgh plus internationally in the World Juniors and Canada Cup.
